HA8 Task 1 - Secondary Research

League of Legends

Pegi rating of 12
Teen rating on ESRB
USK rating 12. USK is a company based in Germany

League of Legends is a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) and like most MOBA's a lot of people would argue that the females are very much over sexualized as they are usually less clothed than how the men in the game are portrayed which is one of the few reasons as to why league of legends has a pegi rating of 12. Another reason to why I think it's rated a 12 is because of the violence that goes on when playing the game but seeing that it's also only rated a 12 in USK which is a company based in Germany means that it's not too violent because Germany has a pretty high standard in violence.

In the league of Legends site I found a general discussion in one of the forums in which they were discussing what League of Legends target audience are, beneath the heading there was an image which seemed to be a voting poll and it showed that there 23 voters in which 10 voted that it was 16 and up, 9 voted that it was 12 and up which is what the Pegi rating is supposed to be. The remaining votes went to 21 and up.

By looking at this graph you can see just how much more men play League of Legends more than women, another thing you can also see is that although the game has pegi rating of 12 you can see that it caters a lot more for players 18 and above. But it also shows us the amount of votes for each age, It's showing that out of the many voters there were 721 that were aged 18-29 in which 678 were male and only 38 were female.

I also found this image out of a few more on the IGN website which Riot Games apparently released showcasing the game community's infographics, and as you can see it says that over 90% of the people that play the game are males and that 85% of them are people from the of 16 to 30. It also says that 60% of the players are enrolled in or have completed some college.

I also found a couple more images that are also significant to the research I am doing. I got the image from the same forum on the IGN website, these images show the peak concurrent players and how many hours the players play with a comparison to the cumulative total play hours being 2+ billion since 2004 and with League of Legends having 1+billion every month. Based on these facts I would say that League of Legend players are hardcore gamers because of the amount of hours they spend playing the game. I think that so many people play League of Legends because of the fact that it's within their interests but also because of the fact that the art is wo well drawn out and I think these are the a couple of the few reasons that people play League of Legends.
(Do note that these infographs are about 4 years old)

"Parents need to know that League of Legends is a Teen-rated online fantasy war game in which kids team up with strangers to challenge other teams in arena-based combat. The goal of the game is to kill opponents -- both the player characters as well as the computer-driven "minions" -- so there's a lot of blood and violence. However, the game is presented from a top-down perspective and characters typically appear pretty small. These factors mitigate the blood effects considerably. A stream of player-authored comments scrolls on-screen throughout and occasionally includes profanity. Parents should also know that online combat games are quickly growing in popularity. E-sports events are held all over the world with large cash prizes. This may make the game even more attractive and draw kids to view televised tournaments online." - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/game-reviews/league-of-legends

The quote above is a summary of League of Legends. The summary is basically a sort of warning to parents, the person that wrote it talks about what you should expect to see within the game, the person talks about the game telling the truth in a bit of an exaggerated manner but with personal experience of the game I can agree with their statement.

The image below shows a chart in which a certain topic is rated out of 5 here you can see that apparently the education value is rated 2/5, violence 3/5, sex 3/5, and etc. There is another image below which says what the age rating for the game should be and what the "kids" think the age rating should be, the parents say that it should 14+ but the kids say the it should only be 12+ which is what it's .
